ELEVATOR TESTING & COMPLIANCE

Navigating New York City elevator testing and compliance requirements can be complex. Noble Elevator provides required elevator testing, inspection coordination, violation correction, and compliance services to help building owners and property managers keep their equipment safe, operational, and in good standing with the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB).

Our team coordinates required testing with approved independent third-party agencies, addresses deficiencies identified during inspections, and completes the repairs and filings necessary to maintain compliance.

CATEGORY 1 (CAT1) ELEVATOR TESTING

Category 1, or CAT1, is an annual no-load safety test required for applicable elevator devices in New York City.

The test evaluates the operation of critical elevator safety components and systems without placing a rated load in the elevator. CAT1 testing must be performed during each annual testing cycle and completed in accordance with NYC DOB requirements.

Noble coordinates CAT1 elevator testing, addresses deficiencies identified during testing, and assists with the required documentation and correction process.

CATEGORY 5 (CAT5) ELEVATOR TESTING

Category 5, or CAT5, is a comprehensive elevator safety test generally required every five years for applicable elevators in New York City.

Unlike CAT1 testing, a CAT5 test is performed at rated load and speed. Test weights are used to verify that the elevator and its safety systems operate properly under full-load conditions.

Noble coordinates the equipment, testing, test weights, and required independent witnessing necessary to complete CAT5 testing and address any deficiencies identified during the process.

PERIODIC ELEVATOR INSPECTIONS

In addition to category testing, New York City requires periodic inspections of applicable elevator devices.

These inspections evaluate the condition and operation of the elevator and its major components. If deficiencies are identified, building owners are responsible for correcting them within the required timeframe and submitting the appropriate documentation to the Department of Buildings.

NYC DOB ELEVATOR VIOLATIONS & CORRECTIONS

Elevator violations can result from equipment deficiencies, failure to maintain an elevator, missed testing or inspection requirements, failure to file required reports, or failure to correct previously identified conditions.
